Private and International Schools in Lisbon: 2026/27 Guide

British, French, German, Spanish and bilingual schools in Lisbon: area, curriculum, ages and 2026/27 fees, plus the commute from Cascais.

Lots of families who settle on the Cascais coast end up looking at schools in Lisbon too. Maybe one parent works in the city, or the curriculum you need is only taught there. Or you’re still deciding whether to live in Cascais or Lisbon at all.

This guide covers the private and international schools in Lisbon that we’ve already profiled. For each one, it shows the neighbourhood, curriculum, ages and published 2026/27 fees. It also covers what the commute from Cascais really involves.

Everything comes from each school’s own website. Where we haven’t confirmed a figure, we say so and don’t guess.

Schools by curriculum

British and Cambridge

The British School of Lisbon is the closest match to a UK school in the city. It follows the English National Curriculum from Nursery to Year 13 and places children by age on 1 September, as in the UK. Primary is near Cais do Sodré and Secondary is in Restelo.

The Lisboan opened in September 2025 in Alcântara. It follows Cambridge International towards IGCSEs and is adding one year group each year.

Prime School International has a campus in Alvalade, alongside Estoril and Sintra. Children follow one Cambridge pathway from Early Years to A Levels.

Bilingual and multi-pathway

PaRK International School teaches younger children bilingually in Portuguese and English up to 4.º ano. Students then move onto Cambridge and IGCSEs, and choose between A Levels and the IB Diploma. Its Lisbon campuses are in Restelo and Praça de Espanha, and its largest campus is in Alfragide, just outside the city. Each campus serves different ages, so check which one fits your child.

Redbridge International School offers French and Portuguese international programmes, with a Cambridge route from Year 8 and an IB Diploma candidacy for the final years. It has campuses in Campo de Ourique and Tapada da Ajuda.

French, German and Spanish

The Lycée français Charles Lepierre is a large AEFE school with the French national curriculum from age 3 to Terminale. Its fees depend on nationality.

Deutsche Schule Lissabon follows the German school system from Kindergarten to Klasse 12 at its campus in Telheiras. The school says all teaching takes place at the Lisbon site from 2026/27.

Instituto Español Giner de los Ríos follows the Spanish system from Educación Infantil to Bachillerato. It’s just west of the city, in Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo.

These schools suit families who’ve already been in that country’s system, or who may move back to it later.

Living in Cascais, school in Lisbon?

It works for plenty of families, but the commute is real and it happens twice a day.

From Cascais, the main routes into Lisbon are the A5 motorway and the coastal road, the Marginal. Both get busy at rush hour. There’s also the Cascais train line, which runs along the coast into Cais do Sodré. That helps most if the school is close to a station at the Lisbon end, or if the school runs a bus from there.

We won’t guess journey times, because they change so much with the hour, the season and the part of Lisbon you’re heading to. Instead, do a test run. Drive or ride the route at 8:00 on a weekday, during term time, and then do the return trip at pick-up time. For train times on the Cascais line and the areas each school bus covers, see our guide to where families live, by school run.

A few questions to ask each school:

  • Is there a school bus from Cascais? Some schools run routes. Prime, for example, says it runs school transport across Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra. Ask where the stops are and what it costs.
  • Which campus would my child be on? Several Lisbon schools have more than one site, and the youngest children are often on a different campus from older siblings.
  • What time does the day start and end? A few minutes’ difference can change your traffic a lot.

If both parents work in Lisbon, a city school can even make life easier. If you work from home on the coast, a school nearer Cascais can save you a lot of time each day. Our guide to schools in Cascais covers those.

How to choose

Start with the curriculum. If you may move again, pick the system your child is most likely to continue in. British, IB, French, German and Spanish routes all lead to different exams and universities.

Then check the commute. Do the 8:00 test run before you fall in love with a school, or with a house.

Then compare the full cost. Add tuition, entry fees, meals and transport for every child. Our fees guide helps with this.

Check the year group. Each school places children by its own birthday rules. Our school year and age-to-grade guide explains how Portuguese, UK, US and IB years line up.

Visit. Book an open day or a private tour. Our open days and enrolment calendar lists the dates schools have published.

You know your child best. After a morning at a school, you’ll usually know whether it feels right. Trust that, and trust what your child tells you on the way home.
